YAY, we're become mainstream. in this case it's a good thing

So I was looking for Some sort of reading material and found a few magazines/books in english to choose from.

Long story short, GQ or some zine like that had something about Christians and sex on the cover, like "the new Christian sex craze" or something.

I got worried. picked it up to see what on earth it would say about us.

It said (not really quoting) "in a world where almost all twentysomethings are out getting some, a new breed is forming. Abstainers." and it went on to talk about how many people our age are actually saving themselves for marriage.

If nothing else, that coverage was very encouraging. Not everything in the article was nice but it certainly wasn't bad.

I'll look for the cover to copy onto here. only 1 min and i'm kicked off the computer...

beach stuff..

Easter is Huge here. like HUGE. almost bigger than New Years! Some things I've experienced:

1. My friend Adolfo found me a room. not just a hotel room, those are boooked completely. I"m staying in a bedroom in an actual house! the mother of a friend of his!!! they're very welcoming about me, a gringa stranger, living there. nice and soo different. I woke up to the baby crying and a rooster outside my window!

2. My host family and the 2 friends jason and leonardo drove me 1.40 hr to the beach. stayed with me until Adolfo found me. and went home. just to give me a ride!

3. my 3 eggs/cheese/sausage, tea, fresh rolls, fresh jam breakfast was 3 dollars.

4. Adolfo's girlfriend had her Tongue Pierced on the Beach yesterday. not like a little shop on the beach. actually under a tarp and from a card tablein the sand.
i came close to getting a tattoo same place/same time. NOT really
by the way, i have pics. of it so i'll post them sometime soon

5. Kite Surfing! Kite Boarding. whatever you want to call it. it's here and it's huge

my home

Santiago de los Caballeros, the second largest city in the Dominican Republic, is surrounded by mountains. Many places of interest are nearby and easy to get to, and it is just a little over an hour's drive to the Atlantic Coast. Known as La Ciudad Corazón, Santiago is the commercial and cultural center of the fertile Cibao Valley region. Although it is a growing city with a population exceeding 700,000, Santiago still retains many features of a small town and Santiaguero hospitality is alive and well.

Founded by noblemen of Columbus's early expeditions, the city has a rich historic and cultural tradition, including the creation of the commercially popular merengue music. Like many Dominican cities, Santiago boasts a diversity of lifestyles. Street vendors walk through residential neighborhoods carrying fruits, vegetables, and other goods in large baskets on their heads. Other merchants come all the way from the campo on donkeys loaded with baskets of goods and announce their wares in a nearly musical chant. The Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration is the city symbol and gathering place for a wide range of cultural activities. It is here that you can ride in a coche, a traditional horse-drawn carriage, for which Santiago is famous.

day 2

Remember earlier when I mentioned the most commen advice for learning Spanish is a latin boyfriend¿ Apparently my host family agrees... I spent my first day with a family friend (i´m assuming) named Jason.

story.. I came home from class and fell into bed for a nap- exhausted from the heat and late night. To me, it would be a nice, relaxing 1st day. I woke up, innocently ate lunch, innocently watched some RERUN 24!!!! Yeah! and innocently went about reading my book.

Suddenly, there´s a knock at the door. Jason! lol. It was very nice though.. he showed me the closest internet cafe, the monument near our home, the supermarkado, etc etc. Later another family friend named Leonardo stopped by and the 3 of us went for ice cream. ????????
A nice older lady did stop by too, so I´m going to assume many visitors are normal. In any case, it´s nice to have friends here already, right¿

by the way, the keyboards are wacky so my grammer may be off. ¿? i loooove the upside down question mark!! haha! i do!

photo- the monument near my home. romantic, eh! just kidding!

the DR

My Adventure Thus Far:
-Detroit to New York, no problem
-New York to the Dominican Republic:
board @ 4:30pm
get off plane at 6:30pm- mechanical failures. great
airport for 2 more hours
board at 9:30pm
Arrive in the DR 1:15AM, get to my poor host families house at 2 AM.

Mom is Sonya, sister is Lizzy, and they are awesome. Lizzy is 24 and studied in New York, so I can cheat if I need to.... good/bad!

Spanish lasted for 1.5 hrs today, almost. not quite the 4, but it was a Latin American introduction =) Good enough for me. I went home and slept more! Now, 2 min. left... Ciao

and I´m off

Hasta en 20 dias!!
